A native of Indiana, Zimmerman (1937-2011) was a highly regarded artist whose paintings illustrated books on the birds of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky. His paintings of 24 species of woodpeckers accompanied a reissue of Arthur Cleveland Bent's Life Histories of North American Woodpeckers in 1992.
