Product Details
First Editions in two volumes: Land Birds (1832) and Water Birds (1834). Fine set in half-leather bindings over brown buckram boards, gilt titles on spine with 5 raised bands. Woodcut illustrations. Both volumes with bookplates of previous owners. Of particular interest is the bookplate of John E. Thayer of Lancaster (MA) who amassed an impressive collection of bird skins and eggs and sponsored natural history expeditions. Thayers Gull was named in his honor. Thayers bookplate is pasted over in the Land Birds volume with the bookplate of a subsequent owner. On the FFEPs of both volumes is the bookplate of Edwin H. Vare, Jr. A rare association copy. The original edition of Nuttall's work, one of the early landmarks in the history of American ornithology. Zimmer
