=A guide with illustrations or photographs for identification
A fully comprehensive field guide to the 521 officially recorded bird species of Mongolia. The species are clearly illustrated in over 154 plates, showing plumage variation between sexes, seasons, and age classes, as well as the upperside and underside of birds in flight. Common, scientific, and Mongolian names are given for each species. The main identifying features of each species are described and key facts cover habitat, identifying features, and voice. Distribution maps provide an at-a-glance view of where and when the birds can be found. The book also includes information on the geography and major habitats of Mongolia.
Our Opinion: The color plates are organized with lines clearly separating species, often showing birds in flight and/or from multiple angles. Opposite the plates is concise text with range maps, English, Latin, and Mongolian names are given, along with size, status and frequency, subspecies names where relevant, habitat, identification, key features, and voice description. Range maps indicate seasonal occurrence and relative altitude. An introductory section explains the geography and habitats of Mongolia, with color photos. The front endpapers have an illustrated quick reference species list, and the back has a map with important birding areas of Mongolia.
