Field Guide=A guide with illustrations or photographs for identification
With The Young Birder's Guide to Birds of Eastern Northern America, Bill Thompson helped spawn a new generation of bird watchers and created the ideal field guide for children and beginning birders alike. Now, he has expanded the scope of that guide to cover the entirety of North America (north of Mexico). Retaining the same visually appealing design, this expanded guide has 100 additional species that inhabit western North America. Now including 300 of the most common birds on the continent, the book is loaded with color photographs, drawings showing typical behaviors, range maps, an easy-to-use checklist, fun facts, and authoritative information about each bird, its vocalizations, and its habitat.

While other field guides might overwhelm kids who are new to birding, The Young Birder's Guide to Birds of North America was created with help from kids. Bill's own son and daughter and their elementary school classes helped select the content. Kid tested, kid approved!

Our Opinion: This new edition has been expanded to cover all of the United States and Canada, so Western kids can join in the fun. The format is exactly the same as the earlier edition, with a color photograph and black & white drawing, color distribution maps, and fun facts. The identification details are broken down into 'Look For' (field marks), 'Listen For' (voice and sounds), 'Remember' (important ID details), and 'Find it' (Habitats).

The introductory information includes What is Birding?, Getting Started in Bird Watching, Identification Basics, Field Skills, Birding Manners, Birding by Habitat, Be Green: Ten Things You Can Do for Birds, How to Use This Guide, and Ten Tips for Beginning Bird Watchers. The book also includes an excellent Resources section and Glossary, as well as a comprehensive index by English and scientific name.
