Our Opinion: For covering an entire continent, this book is surprisingly complete. Ertel's field-guide-like format offers color photos of the birds opposite brief descriptive text and distribution maps on a two-page spread. The text includes English, French, German, and scientific names, along with measurements, field marks, habitat, and voice. The book includes a reference to orders and families of African birds, extensive photography details, literature references, and a species index which includes all languages.
Ertel writes: "This book should provide a survey of all the important representatives of African bird families, as well as enable the ornithologically interested tourist to identify the majority of bird species he will encounter on a trip to the tourist countries of Africa." " Those who wish... to identify all the birds, including the female weavers or sunbirds, will certainly require more extensive literature. No book that fits into hand luggage can fulfill this aim. "
