Very good hardcover of the first edition. Forty-five hand-colored lithographic plates after J.G. Keulemans, 59 woodcut illustrations. Original brown cloth, teg, bumped corners. Mivart was a colleague of both T.H. Huxley and Charles Darwin, but fell out with them when he reversed his views on natural selection. Trying to reconcile Darwin's theory of evolution with the beliefs of the Catholic Church, he ended being condemned by all sides. He occupied the chair of philosophy of natural history at the University Louvain, Belgium. 'One of the finest monographs on the subject.' Casey Wood.
