Louis Agassiz Fuertes accompanied the Field Museum - Chicago Daily News Expedition to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) 1926-1927 as artist and ornithologist. Prior to this expedition, Fuertes was engaged solely in painting American birds and he relished the opportunity for life studies of African birds. During the expedition under varied and difficult conditions, he collected and personally prepared, labeled, and packed no less than one thousand birds skins. Fuertes made a total of 108 paintings on the expedition. Many have felt these paintings represent the highwater mark of his career. His life tragically ended soon after his return to America, cutting short a brilliant career.
The thirty-two subjects represented in the portfolio were selected from the originals preserved in Field Museum. They include four studies of mammals and twenty-eight of birds. They were produced by offset lithography in eight and sometimes nine colors with great fidelity to the originals.
