The introduction (178 pages) by William H. Seward covers a great variety of subjects including internal improvements (two plates of the Croton Aqueduct), agriculture, and a description of published works on New York. A note on the penitentiary system of the state by John L. O'Sullivan is included. DeKay's section on Mammalia with the colored engravings is rare.
