Originally published in wrappers in three parts, 1893-1900. Illustrated with 55 hand-colored, lithographed plates by J.G. Keulemans and F.W. Frowhawk (the majority by Keulemans), 20 collotype plates and 8 monochromes showing scenery and birdlife.
Rothschild sponsored a collecting expedition to the Hawaiian Islands towards the end of the 19th century. The expedition led by Henry Palmer lasted for nearly three years and yielded a total of 1,832 birds documenting many species which are now extinct. A rare amd important work.
