Product Details

In four volumes, 1918-1922. Published under the auspices of the New York Zoological Society. The ninety colored plates are executed in various ways, including chomolithography and collotype. The artists include A. THORBURN, G.E. LODGE, H. GRÖNVOLD, and L.A. FUERTES, 88 photogravure plates from photographs by Beebe and others, 20 distribution maps, captioned tissue-guards. Limited to 600 numbered copies of which this is No.232. Original burgundy cloth. Shelf wear and bumped corners. Loose tissue guards to prevent offsetting present at many of the photogravures. This was one of the earliest definitive studies of pheasants in their natural habitats. Beebe's text is based on his own extensive travels through Asia and studies in the leading natural history museums of the world. The first volume, published in London, appeared in 1918; the remaining volumes were delayed on account of WWI. Recognized as 'perhaps the greatest ornithological work of the present century, notable not only for its beauty and the wealth of information it contains, but also for the unusual grace of its prose' -Mengel.
