Volumes I-V (lacking Volume VI) of the First Edition of a vastly popular work. The present five volumes, 1851-1856, contain 298 plates made from wood blocks engraved by the printer Fawcett of Driffield and hand colored. The quality of the plates found in the first edition is superior to those found in subsequent editions. Half green Morocco over marbled boards.Spines with raised bands, gilt titles and illustrations in panels. Leather and boards rubbed here and there, but a handsome set nevertheless. The title pages have the signature of the first owner, William T. Van Dyck, zoology professor athe Syrian Protestant College (1880-1882) and its succesor, the American University of Beirut (1915-1939).
