Product Details

The first volume of the Handbook of the Birds of the World was published in 1992 and we expect the final volume (16) will be published in 2012. This monumental series deserves a storage solution that will both display and protect it to allow for a lifetime of use and enjoyment.

Working with local craftsmen and native woods, Buteo Books has commissioned designs for two bookcases to showcase the complete set of the Handbook of the Birds of the World. Shown here is a classic bookcase crafted in solid North American Black Walnut. The case can be made from a variety of native wood species to fit your taste. Customers may choose between cherry, oak, sassafrass or walnut when ordering their made-to-order bookcase. Quotes can also be provided for the wood species of your choice.

The Classic bookcase is a very simple design, with sleek lines and no frills. It is hand-built by a local woodworker, using dovetail joinery, and often employing hand tools.

A separate bookstand, designed to hold the open book, is available to match either design, for $200. It is free standing and can be moved to a desk or table for the convenience of the reader.

The custom-made bookshelf is sized specifically to hold the complete series, which is a projected total of sixteen volumes. The case shown here measures 20.5"W x 31.5"H x 12"D. With the Book Stand the height is 38 1/4" tall.

Shipping: There is a $75 packing and crating fee which includes insurance. Shipping rates will be quoted according to address via either road freight or UPS/Fed-EX rates.

This item is made-to-order. Please allow two weeks for completion, and contact us with any special requests. Please contact us if you have any questions.

The book stand is available separately.

"The series has developed into an immense and an immensely valuable resource, as well as one that has a unique aesthetic." -(Ibis 151/4)
