Ken Simpson is a well-known Australian birder and coauthor of Birdwatching in Australia and New Zealand. He is a recipient of the Australian Natural History Medallion. Nicolas Day is a full-time wildlife artist and teacher. He exhibits regularly in galleries in Victoria, and his work has appeared in other books, including Birds of the Solomons, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.
OUR THOUGHTS:
Day's illustrations are very beautiful, and technically well-done; usually placing the birds against a subtle habitat background. The plates are sometimes cramped, with several species on one plate, but never so much as to lose quality. Key field marks are highlighted by pointers between similar species. The text opposite the plates is concise but quite complete, and is enhanced by a thumbnail color distribution map and a black & white supplemental illustration of each species. The supplemental information includes an extensive vagrant bird bulletin, with illustrations and maps; an explanation of habitats, breeding summaries, a checklist for Australian island territories, tips and hints, Australian and New Zealand birdwatching and naturalist organizations, glossary, references, and index of common and Latin names.
