A chronicle of the author’s Big Year.

In 1998, Sandy Komito engaged in what serious birders call a Big Year run. This is a year-long marathon contest where a birder tries to see as many different birds as possible in that single year. Ever since Sandy set the old record for North America in 1987, a few have challenged, but none have broken his record. Could he effectively challenge and break that record?

This book, written in his own inimitable style, takes you through the year, as he attempts to break his eleven year old record. It's a fast-paced, exciting story of his experiences on the road, detailing the joys of success, the disappointments with failure, all part of the drama experienced during this year-long adventure. His travels take him all across the North American continent as he journeys to remote areas of Alaska and Newfoundland. The southern and western parts of the United States are repeatedly crisscrossed as he searches for the rare and accidental visitors that may have somehow strayed to our shores. He utilizes a goodly number of boat trips, voyaging far out into both oceans in an effort to search for the rare and unusual birds found only in those pelagic environments.

Sandy tries to get the reader to join him as he goes from place to place, attempting to show the world of birds from his perspective. For those who may never aspire to such an adventure, it's a vicarious journey one can experience through the author's pen. Lenghty authorial inscription to previous owner.Text block crudely glued to binding.
