An annotated checklist and more. Includes a fold-out birding map of the Roanoke Valley. My main purpose in writing Birds and Birding the Roanoke Valley is to provide information to birders than can be used along with a good field guide to find and accurately identify birds. The Roanoke Valley as defined for birding purposes is Roanoke City, Salem, Roanoke County, Botetourt County, and the Blue Ridge Parkway between Floyd and Rockbridge Counties including the Peaks of Otter. Organized bird counts from which I have gleaned information include: Roanoke VA CBC, Fincastle VA CBC, Fincastle BBC, and counts at the Harvey's Knob hawk watch. I have excluded data from Peaks of Otter BSD totals because much of it comes from areas well into the Piedmont. There is some data included that I could only find in the Gold Book. I have tried to make the information user friendly and the lack of a fairly pure, scientific approach will make the book not well thought of by some, but more helpful to others. Records from the VAP, species reviews by VARCOM, and the BBS are not included except where I think necessary. I have used the notation Status: to give a somewhat current appraisal of a particular species and that includes expected dates.
