This book is a must for birders and visitors to the Calumet Region, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and the Indiana Dunes State Park. This second edition updates every bird species found in the Dunes. A Finding guide and checklist to all the species of birds that have been recorded in the Dunes National Lakeshore area. Brock begins with an essay on the geological makeup of the Dunes and Lake Michigan's effect on bird migration. Next, he provides information and easy-to-use maps for fourteen important birding areas. The Species Descriptions section is drawn from a database of over 100,000 entries and contains updated, computer-generated histograms that show the annual time periods when a bird is most likely to be seen. For migratory species, migration envelopes with pertinent information on arrival, peak, and departure dates are included. New additions to the book include Peak Counts of each bird species for Spring and Fall. Brock has also appended bar graphs with his unique Finding Code, that enable the user to understand the difficulty of sighting a particular species during any month of the year.
