One text page torn. The plates, derived from several government publications, vary both in the paper on which they are printed and condition; a few plates with notes and wear, occasional foxing. Most are in very good condition with tissue guards. $1,500.00
A later edition of a work first published in 1860. The plates illustrate 148 species not depicted by Audubon or Cassin. All of the plates are said to have been carefully retouched or redrawn from more characteristic specimens of the birds. Apparently, less common than the first edition.

Initially conceived as an oology of North American birds, the scope of the work expanded and two volumes were published with the above title. Major Bendire's failing health precluded the publication of additional volumes. Bent's Life Histories (1919-1968) used much of Bendire's material.

This second posthumous edition, with revised arrangement and nomenclature contains twenty tail-pieces not previously published. Many editions of Bewick's History of British Birds were published; his skill as an artist and wood engraver popularized birds for succeeding generations. John James Audubon called on Bewick in 1827 and named Bewick's Wren to honor Bewick's achievements.
