28-293. NEW! SIEGEL, Deborah C. and Storrs L. OLSON. The Birds of the Republic of Panama, Part 5: Gazetteer and Bibliography. Buteo Books, 2008. An ornithological gazetteer and bibliography have long been needed to properly complete Alexander Wetmore’s four-part work on the birds of Panamá. This concluding volume describes and locates all of the place names referred to by ornithologists and collectors and provides a comprehensive bibliography. Much of the information is based upon the extensive card files left by Wetmore, but the painstaking labor to expand upon this information and compile an updated manuscript has been accomplished by Siegel and Olson. While Parts 1-4 of The Birds of the Republic of Panamá are no longer in print, used sets may be obtained from Buteo Books. 516 pp. $45.00 THE BIRDS OF THE REPUBLIC OF PANAMÁ Part 5. Gazetteer and Bibliography by Deborah C. Siegel and Storrs L. Olson An ornithological gazetteer and bibliography have long been needed to properly complete Alexander Wetmore’s four-part work on the birds of Panamá (Wetmore, 1965, 1968, 1972; Wetmore et al, 1984). This concluding volume describes and locates all of the place names referred to by ornithologists and collectors and provides a comprehensive bibliography. Much of the information is based upon the extensive card files left by Wetmore, but the painstaking labor to expand upon this information and compile an updated manuscript has been accomplished by Deborah Siegel and Storrs Olson. The inclusion of the portrait of Alexander Wetmore and the biographical sketch, Alexander Wetmore (1886-1978) and the Ornithology of Panamá, by Storrs Olson are a fitting tribute to Wetmore and his magnum opus. The shaded relief map on the front endpapers and the life zone map on the rear endpapers are designed to enhance the usefulness of this and previous volumes of The Birds of the Republic of Panamá. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Deborah Siegel is a biologist and a teacher. She received her B.S. (Biochemistry) from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and her M.S. (Fishery Resources) from the University of Idaho. She has worked in Africa, Europe, and the Americas, and began her career as a Peace Corps Fisheries Volunteer in Sierra Leone. She is currently teaching biology at the International School of Helsinki. Storrs L. Olson was born in Chicago in 1944 and moved to Tallahassee, Florida, with his family in 1950. In high school he was mentored by Horace Loftin and spent many enjoyable days with him in the field trapping and banding shorebirds and raptors. He got his first taste of the Neotropics in 1963 when he stayed with the Loftin family in Panamá while completing a semester at Canal Zone Junior College. He returned to Panamá in 1966 as part of a program investigating the effects of botulinal toxins on vultures. While in Panamá he collected birds, including a number of important new specimen records that brought him to the attention of Alexander Wetmore, whom he first met on a trip to Washington in 1967. After receiving Bachelor and Master's degrees from Florida State University, Olson moved to the Washington area in 1968 and held various positions in the Smithsonian Institution until moving to Baltimore to attend Johns Hopkins University from which he received his doctorate in 1972. In August 1971, he moved into the National Museum of Natural History on a predoctoral fellowship and never left, attaining the post of Curator of Birds in 1975. He has published nearly 400 titles on fossil and living birds of all ages and many different parts of the world, including co-authorship of the final volume of Wetmore's Birds of the Republic of Panamá. Olson participated in the Smithsonian Bocas Expeditions from 1987 to 1991, during which specimens of vertebrates were collected on all of the main islands of the archipelago of Bocas del Toro, Panamá.
