"The only field guide to New Zealand birds officially endorsed
by the Ornithological Society of New Zealand"
This new edition of the celebrated field guide by Robertson and Heather
features 74 paintings of New Zealand birds, including rare and recently
extinct species. This comprehensive and easy-to-use guide also includes
distribution maps and in-depth guide to field identification. This edition
has the addition of a small section of where to watch birds in New Zealand.
The color plates are the same as are found in the
concise Hand Guide to the Birds of New Zealand, published in
the United States by Oxford University Press in 2001, but the text section
missing from the smaller Hand Guide is present here, with
extensive details on size, alternative names, geographical
variation, distribution, habitat, population, behavior, feeding habits,
conservation, breeding, and further reading references.
Weighing in at nearly two pounds and measuring 6 ½" x
8 ½" x 1 ¼", this book is larger than the
average pocket guide. A traveller wishing to keep his pack light may
prefer the Hand Guide to the Birds of New Zealand (see link below), a pound lighter
and an inch thinner. Birders who want more than the concise identification
text, however, will find everything they want in this definitive guide.
The paintings were executed by a leading New Zealand bird artist and the text
by two renowned New Zealand bird experts, assisted
by many other bird-watchers and scientists.
