The definitive, comprehensive, up-to-date guide to all of China's 556 mammal species. Similar to the preceding guide, this book has brief text opposite color plates. Here, the distribution maps can be found with the detailed text, which includes distinctive characteristics, distribution, natural history, conservation status, comments, and references. English and scientific names are given, as well as Chinese names in characters and pinyin format.

An introductory section gives an overview of China's geography and mammalian biogeography, history of Chinese mammalogy, mammalian conservation, and China's protected area system. It also includes several pages of color photographs of China's habitats. This book covers: Proboscidea, Sirenia, Scandentia, Primates, Rodentia, Lagomorpha, Erinaceomorpha, Soricomorpha, Pholidota, Carnivora, Perissodactyla, Artiodactyla, and Cetacea.
