Field Guide to the Birds of Machu Picchu and the Cusco Region. Second edition. WALKER, Barry. Nuevas Imágenes S.A., 2005. 31 color plates illustrating 417 species, a color map of the Sanctuary and a comprehensive introduction that deals with the biogeography and conservation, and a checklist. Illustrated by Jon FJELDSA. 217 pp. Paper. Item #278. $39.00

This new guide is graced with 32 color plates by renowned field guide artist Jon Fjeldsa, whose work is known from such books as Birds of the High Andes and Grebes: Oxford Bird Families of the World Series. This excellent book includes indices of English and Scientific names, an extensive bibliography, glossary, and complete annotated checklist. Also included are articles on conservation in the area, and species of special interest and concern.

The color plates are opposite abbreviated text, while detailed species accounts make up the rest of the book. Despite all it has to offer, this lightweight book is still easy to carry in the field - and the suitcase.

We have been waiting a couple of years for the final publication of the Field Guide to the Birds of Machu Picchu, and find that it was worth the wait.
