The author has had a long and varied relationship with the Northern Goshawk and this book reflects this experience in addition to covering the life history of the species, its relation to humans, and the conservation concerns regarding its survival.

From the Publisher:

The Northern Goshawk is a large and spectacular bird of prey that lives in boreal forests throughout the Holarctic region. This powerful hunter of large birds and woodland mammals has been persecuted for many years, to the point of extinction in the United Kingdom. However, a new population became established in the 1960s, mainly through falconry escapes, but the species remains rare and elusive in this country, and a combination of hard work and a little luck is needed to see this magnificent raptor. Fortunately, the species is still fairly common in much of Europe and Asia, and is a flagship species for forest preservation in North America.

The Goshawk is an authoritative yet highly readable monograph of the species. It includes chapters on nomenclature, races and morphs, biometrics, nesting, incubation and chick-rearing, migration, feeding ecology, population dynamics, and conservation, punctuated throughout with illuminating tales from author Robert Kenward’s extensive field research. The book is packed with illustrations, figures and maps, and contains a selection of the author’s superb photographs of the birds.

The product of almost 30 years work, this title is a classic Poyser monograph; birders will enjoy the fascinating insights into the biology of the bird, while academics will appreciate the book’s comprehensive literature review.
