Volume 1. Passerines: Tyrant Flycatchers to Buntings.

By Norman Arlott.

Published by Princeton University Press, 2007.

240 pp.

Paperback - $29.95

September 2007:

This book is one half of a publication intended to form a comprehensive guide to the Birds of the Palearctic Region: an area including Europe, North Africa, Asia north of the Himalayas, China, Korea, and Japan. Yet this book comes in at only 240 pages, and weighing just under 14 ounces. So how did so many species fit into this tiny volume?

Part of the answer to this riddle lies in the title. While other volumes in the Illustrated Checklist series just served to confuse consumers who were looking for a "Field Guide", this volume lives up to its name. In the UK, this book was published under the title Collins Field Guide - Birds of the Palearctic: Passerines. According to reviewer Charlie Moores 1, Arlott himself fought against the "Field Guide" representation, because he intentionally fashioned the book as a "coloured checklist."

And "Illustrated Checklist" is indeed the best description for this book. The illustrations are somewhat small, though the artwork is of excellent quality, and detail and color representation seem good overall. The text, following the format of this series, is succinct: English name, Latin name, length, field notes, song, call, habitat, and races. The distribution maps form a separate section of the book and seem fine aside from the fact that they are too small to represent such a large section of the globe.

Volume 2. Non-Passerines: Loons to Woodpeckers.

By Norman Arlott.

Published by Princeton University Press, February 2009.

256 pp.

Paperback - $29.95

February 2009:

The second and final installation in this series follows very much the format of the first. 91 color plates illustrate all field-identifiable species, including subspecies and color morphs, with distribution maps separated to the back of the book. Succinct facing-page text concentrates on key field-identification features, including voice. Though not for those seeking in-depth information in the field, this is an excellent option for anyone looking for a compact yet comprehensive guide.

Especially useful for those "in-between" countries which don't have a guide of their own, or for a whirlwind tour across Europe and Asia, this comprehensive series on Eurasian birds illustrates every species in the Palearctic.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

This is one of two companion field guides that illustrate and describe all of the approximately 1,800 bird species found in the Palearctic--the huge region that includes Europe, Asia north of the Himalayas, Africa north of the Sahara Desert, and the Middle East excluding the Gulf countries. This volume covers non-passerines--non-songbirds, including raptors, owls, swifts, hummingbirds, cuckoos, and pigeons. It includes every non-passerine species and subspecies, in every adult plumage--all illustrated and described by Norman Arlott, a leading bird artist with many years of field experience. The two volumes of Birds of Europe, Russia, China, and Japan are the only field guides to illustrate and describe every bird species in the Palearctic. And, for many parts of this region, these books provide the first and only field guides.

  • Color plates of all field-identifiable species, including subspecies and color morphs
  • Succinct facing-page text concentrates on key field-identification features, including voice
  • Detailed distribution map for each species
