U.S. POSTAL SERVICE RATE INCREASE
As of January 27, 2013, the U.S.P.S. increased its rates significantly for all Priority Mail and Express Mail options, for both domestic and international shipping. We regret the increase, and will do our best to base our shipping prices on our actual costs whenever possible. Please contact us if you have any questions about the changes.

HOW ARE SHIPPING AND HANDLING CHARGES CALCULATED?

All shipping prices are based on the actual postage cost calculated by weight and delivery location, plus a $2.00 handling fee. You can see a cost quote by putting the items you want in your shopping basket, and click the Calculate Shipping button. Unless specified otherwise, orders are shipped by the cheapest method; either by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) or United Parcel Service (UPS) at our discretion. Please specify if either of these methods is unsuitable for your location. Expedited services are available at extra charge. See below for options.

DOMESTIC ORDERS:

U.S.P.S. FIRST CLASS MAIL:
First Class Mail has a weight limit of 13 ounces. Postage is determined by weight, plus a $2.00 handling fee. Average delivery time is 1 to 7 days.

U.S.P.S. MEDIA MAIL (Book Rate) - Standard Domestic Postage:
We have found USPS Media Mail to be quite reliable and economical, but books sent by this method may take up to 1-3 weeks to reach you. If you require your book(s) by a certain date, we recommend an expedited option.

U.S.P.S. PRIORITY MAIL and EXPRESS MAIL:
Postage is determined by weight and delivery zip code, including a $2.00 handling fee.

Flat-rate options:
Flat rate boxes and envelopes are one price regardless of weight, up to a maximum of 70 pounds. NOTE: Because this method is calculated by size and not weight, it cannot be calculated online. If the order is small enough to fit into a Flat-Rate envelope or box, charges will be reduced accordingly.

  • Flat-rate Priority Mail envelope - $7.00 (Size: 11.625" X 15.125)
  • Flat-rate Priority Mail small box - $7.00 (Size: 5-3/8" x 8-5/8" x 1-5/8")
  • Flat-rate Priority Mail medium box - $14.20 (Size: 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8" or 11" X 8.5" X 5.5")
  • Flat-rate Priority Mail large box - $18.70 (Size: 12" x 12" x 5 ½")
  • Flat-rate Express Mail envelope - $21.80 (Size: 11.625" X 15.125")
The USPS Flat-rate envelope usually holds a field-guide-size paperback, and the Flat-rate box can hold up to about six average-size books. If you have any questions, please contact us for a quote.

UNITED PARCEL SERVICE (UPS):
Postage is determined by weight and delivery zip code, including a $2.00 handling fee. See delivery options, below. Optional Services, Upon Request:

  • Saturday Delivery: Available with Next-Day and 2nd Day delivery. Fee: $15.00
  • Delivery Confirmation: $2.00 per package
  • Delivery Confirmation Signature Required: $3.25 per package
  • Delivery Confirmation Adult Signature Required: $4.25 per package
  • Insurance: Available in $100 increments

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:
As of 2009, the US Postal Service discontinued all international surface mail options. Options now include Priority Airmail and Express Airmail, which both offer tracking. The Calculate Shipping option on this website calculates postage by weight. USPS flat-rate boxes are also an economic option, but depend on the size of the order, as they must fit inside a special carton. The weight limit for international flat-rate boxes is 20 pounds. Insurance is also available for a fee.

Canada and Mexico:
Flat-rate options are:

  • Flat-rate Priority Mail Envelopes for small items cost $21.95 - NOTE:: PMI Flat-rate envelopes are economical, but are NOT trackable, while boxes and packages are. Time in transit is variable: envelopes can take from 3 days to 3 weeks.
  • Flat-rate Express Mail Envelopes for small items are $36.95,
  • Medium Flat-rate boxes can fit an average of four to six medium-sized books for $42.95, and
  • Large Flat-rate boxes can fit larger books for $55.95.

Worldwide:
Flat-rate options are:

  • Flat-rate Priority Mail envelopes for small items are available for $25.80, NOTE:: PMI Flat-rate envelopes are economical, but are NOT trackable, while boxes and parcels are.
  • Flat-rate Express Mail Envelopes for small items are available for $46.95,
  • Medium Flat-rate boxes can fit an average of four to six medium-sized books for $61.95, and
  • Large Flat-rate boxes can fit larger books for $79.95.
The USPS Flat-rate envelope usually holds one field-guide-size paperback, and the Flat-rate box can hold up to about six average-size books. If you have any questions, please contact us for a quote. Larger orders must be quoted depending on weight.

Military APO addresses:
Orders can be shipped by the Postal System, using Media Mail, Priority Mail, or Express Mail. Charges are based on domestic shipping fees.

If the above schedule proves inequitable, actual shipping charges plus an appropriate amount for handling may be applied.
You can calculate postage for your particular order in the Shopping Basket, or you may contact us for a quote for your particular order.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT MY ORDER TO BE DELIVERED?
Orders are usually shipped within 24 hours of the receipt of your order, from Shipman, VA 22971.

Worldwide Expedited (two to five days)
Worldwide Express (one or two days)
(customs clearance and brokerage are included with Express and Expedited)

Expedited Options:
USPS shipments are picked up at approximately noon each day, and UPS shipments are picked up at approximately 1:00 PM each day. One-day, Two-day, and Three-day delivery times are based on the day of shipment. Your order must be received by 10:00 A.M. EST to guarantee a same-day shipment. If it is later than that, please call us to see if same-day shipment is still possible.

UPS offers Saturday delivery for Next Day and Second-Day delivery, for an additional $20. Please contact us or include a note in the Special Instructions field to request Saturday Delivery and accept the $20 charge.

International Post
Please allow 1 to 4 weeks for delivery worldwide:
Priority AirMail usually takes 3 to 21 days to Canada, 1 to 3 weeks to the rest of the world.
Express AirMail usually takes 2 - 5 business days to Canada, and an average of one week to the rest of the world.

Post Office Boxes
If the ship to address includes a P.O. Box number, your order will be carried by the United States Postal Service. UPS does not deliver to Post Office boxes.

If you would prefer not to place your order online, you may print out our order form in either HTML or PDF to assist you in placing your order. You may then contact us by phone, fax, e-mail or mail to place your order. Please provide your name, shipping address, and either telephone or e-mail address in case we need to contact you. We will also need the credit card number, expiration date, and name on card.

Please note: E-mail and fax technology are fallible. Occasionally, e-mails get lost, and faxes come through blank. If you send an order by one of these methods and do not receive a confirmation of receipt, please contact us to check.

Another note: Please double check your address for typographical errors, especially the zip code or postal code. Although we attempt to verify addresses, we can't catch everything, and we cannot be responsible for lost packages due to this type of error.

SALES TAX

Virginia residents must add sales tax at the current rate of 5%. Please calculate 5% of the total cost of the books, not including shipping. Please contact us if you need assistance.

PAYMENT OPTIONS:

Prepayment is required by check, money order, or credit card in US Dollars.   We accept Mastercard or Visa credit cards.   Please provide card number, name on card, and expiration date.   For security purposes, please do not send cash or request CODs. PayPal is possible by special request, but any applicable fees must be paid by the buyer.

Charging Your Credit Card
We do not charge your credit card until the date we ship your merchandise to you. Orders are subject to verification and acceptance before shipping. We are not responsible for delays due to typographical errors, but will make every attempt to contact you to correct the information and complete the order.

Multiple Shipments
If your order is sent in multiple shipments (due to backorders or special request), your credit card will be charged separately for each shipment.

Payment Processing

RETURNS

Books and media may be returned within 14 days for a refund or credit of the cost of the item. Shipping and handling charges are not refundable as part of a regular return; we will refund the cost of the item.
If the reason for return is due to a mistake on the part of Buteo Books, we will of course refund shipping in full.

Please contact us to request a return. You may use any shipping method you choose, but we highly recommend a traceable method. Please enclose a copy of the original receipt to ensure proper credit. Please be sure to pack the products with sufficient cushioning to ensure that they arrive in new condition. Damage during return shipping due to poor packaging will result in a discounted refund. A refund will be made by the same method as original payment unless you arrange otherwise.

Audio, Video, and multimedia items are not refundable if they have been removed from shrinkwrap or if they were not originally shrinkwrapped.

GIFTS

Buteo Books offers gift certificates in any amount, which are good for one year from the date of purchase. No postage charge for mailing certificates alone. You can choose to have them mailed to you, so that you can present it yourself, or we can mail them directly to the recipient, with a gift card. Shipping cost and tax can be paid for using a gift certificate. If the total order amount, including merchandise, shipping, and sales tax (for Virginia customers only) exceeds the amount of the gift certificate, the remainder can be paid by Visa, Mastercard, or check.

Gift wrapping is available for a $3 fee. This includes a bird- or nature-themed gift wrap and a similarly themed gift card, made out as you wish.

Prices are in U.S. Dollars, and prices listed on this site are subject to change without notice. Publishers often raise prices, and international currency exchange rates and shipping costs force us to cover our costs. We make every attempt to keep prices on this site current, but human or computer error may result in an incorrect listing. Please contact us for up-to-date pricing and availability information.

You may be subject to taxes and/or duties levied by your province or country, and Buteo Books is not responsible for keeping up-to-date information for every country. If you refuse shipment because you are surprised by these taxes and duties, you are still liable to Buteo Books for outbound and return postage and any other costs it incurred in trying to fill your order.

ARE YOUR BOOKS NEW OR USED?

All of the stock listed on this website is brand new unless specified otherwise. We do have a wide selection of out-of-print, rare, antiquarian, and used bird books available, but they are currently only a small number of them available on this website. See the Antiquarian page for more details.

PRIVACY POLICY

To put it simply, We NEVER give, rent, sell, or otherwise share your information with any other party.

Your address is purely for billing and/or shipping, we only use your phone number in case we need to contact you about questions or problems with your order (it is recommended that you give us a phone number if you need expedited shipping). Your e-mail address will be kept completely private, and is only used in the manner for which you gave it. If you signed up for our monthly e-mail newsletter, we will send you only monthly newsletters, and if you gave us your e-mail as part of an order, we will only send updates and order-related inquiries. We will not send newsletters unless you request them.
